Elder Care Fundamentals: What You Should Know

After watching several of my family members struggle with dementia and various other age-related conditions, I spent a lot of time researching the options for assisted living, in-home care, and nursing homes. I wanted to be sure that I understood what was out there before my parents came to need it. All of my research helped me learn a lot about future care options for my family. I decided to help clarify the options for others who may be as confused as I was. This intention of this blog is to do just that. I hope that the information here helps you understand the basics so you can make the right choice when you need to.

The Benefits Of Hospice Home Care For The Patient And Family

Hospice care is designed to provide support for those who have a disease that can't be cured. If you are struggling with a diagnosis, or can't seem to get pain under control no matter what, hospice home care can have a positive impact. Many people don't begin hospice care until much later than they should because they believe it is a sign of giving up. Choosing hospice home care doesn't mean you have no hope, it means that you have made the decision to get the comfort care you deserve as you deal with an illness that has no cure. Patients and their caregivers benefit from the practical and emotional support provided by hospice care services.

Practical Support During a Difficult Time

If you want to remain at home to be cared for, hospice care provides practical support during this time. The setup of the home is considered, and hospice services will look for ways that you can be made more comfortable. If you need a hospital bed or a reclining chair, hospice care gets these items into the home so that caregivers have an easier time providing help.

Nursing Care and Hospice

Nursing care is provided for patients who are at home on hospice care. Routine visits are made to check on the patient and to see if there are any changes in their condition. Nurses are also on call at all times for caregivers to call in an emergency. If pain isn't being controlled, a hospice nurse can get additional medication sent to the home. While nurses don't stay 24 hours a day with the patient, they are available to support the patient and caregivers throughout the process.

Emotional and Spiritual Support

It is anxiety producing to live with an illness that can't be cured. Hospice care involves more than nursing care, as they provide emotional support as well. A social worker is assigned to each hospice case and is there to answer questions and support everyone involved in taking care of the individual. Social workers are adept at recognizing strengths in caregivers and in locating additional services that might be needed for the patient.

Hospice home care allows patients to be cared for with more dignity and less pain. For caregivers, hospice provides practical advice and support as they deal with the growing needs of the person they are taking care of. Hospice might not cure a disease, but they will care for the person until the end.
